The Process: A holistic approach to digital painting tutorials
So I've started a new series on my YouTube channel I'm calling it "The Process". My idea is pretty simple. Its digital painting tutorials but with a cinematic twist. I want to explore art and the digital painting process in a holistic and broader context. Not focus so much on specific step by step and more on the bigger ideas and concepts.
In the first episode (also linked below) I go through the process of a piece I did titled "Dragon Slayer". I tried my hand at a new technique using gradient maps in photoshop. Gradient maps as I understand them use the values of a gray scale to map selected colors to an image. This was my first time attempting to use gradient maps and I was unsuccessful! Haha but, thats okay this is all a learning experience and I learned a lot while doing this piece. For instance I wanted to include a street art element into this piece and did so by adding a graffiti style title in the background. Digitally working in photoshop means I have the luxury of doing things a little bit differently than they have to be done in the real world. How ever I did try to mimic techniques I noticed being used in graffiti in my own piece. This was something I've never tried before but I'm happy with how it came out.
Im working on a Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 this tool is a god sent when digital painting in photoshop CC 2018. The 1:1 experience means I can draw and sketch digitally just like I would on a piece of paper in my sketch book!
Have a watch and let me know what you think!
